Fire Safety for Kids

Be Prepared:

House numbers – Make sure the firefighters can read the address on your house so they can find you.
Fire Extinguishers – Keep a fire extinguisher in your house.
Home Fire Escape Plan:
  • Draw a plan of your house and mark where your windows, doors, stairs and exits are. Help your parents draw an escape plan for each room.
  • Select an outside meeting place that the family will go to if there is a fire.
  • Practice fire drills.

Smoke Alarms:
  • Put smoke detectors on every floor in your house.
  • Check the batteries often to make sure they are not "dead."

Play it Safe:

Call for Help – Leave the house and dial 911 on a cell phone or at the neighbors. Be sure you know your address.
Never play with matches! Tell an adult if you see another child who is lighting matches.
If there is smoke:
  • Roll out of bed, get on your hands and knees and crawl to the nearest exit.
  • If you come to a door, touch the door with the back of your hand to see if it’s hot before you open it. If it hot, there is a fire on the other side. Try to find another exit.
  • If it’s a cold door, keep your face away from the door and open it a little to check. Be ready to close it fast if there is smoke or fire.
  • Block bottom of the door with a blanket to keep out smoke
  • Crawl to the window, wave a blanket or sheet out the window and yell FIRE!
  • Don’t hide from the fire or firefighter. It will make it harder for them to get you to safety. Don’t worry about their masks, they may look scary, but they help them breathe in a fire.
  • If your clothes catch on fire – STOP running…DROP down to the ground…Roll around on the ground to smother the fire.
